Maha Kumbh Mela: A sacred, spiritual occasion

đź”± What is Maha Kumbh Mela?

Maha Kumbh Mela is considered the largest spiritual pilgrimage in the world. It is a special fair held in four holy cities: Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. This great festival, which takes place once every 12 years, is attended by millions, if not crores, of devotees, saints, and yogis, who come together in one place to bathe in the holy rivers and pray for salvation. The grandeur, spiritual power, and wonderful atmosphere of this fair are sure to give goosebumps to everyone who reads it.

âť“ Why Maha Kumbh Mela?

Maha Kumbh Mela is not just an ordinary gathering – it is a magnificent confluence of spirituality, culture and faith.

Reasons:

  1. Puranic significance: It is believed that drops of nectar from the Amrita Kalash met in these rivers. The scriptures say that bathing here washes away the sins of previous births.
  2. Once in 144 years: While the regular Kumbh Mela comes once in 12 years, Maha Kumbh Mela comes only after 144 years. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event!
  3. The gateway to salvation in Kali Yuga: Taking a bath in the Ganges is considered the easiest way to salvation in Kali Yuga. Bathing in Maha Kumbh gives infinite merit.

🛕 Highlights of Maha Kumbh Mela

  • The glory of bathing: It is believed that bathing on the main bathing days (new moon, full moon) washes away sins and leads to salvation.
  • Darshan of saints: Naga saints, yogis, and sages come in thousands to spread penance and knowledge.
  • Akhand Ganga Aarti: The aarti held every night on the banks of the Ganges creates a magnificent spectacle in the light of lamps.

🌌 Planetary Position & Astronomical Significance

One of the main reasons for the Maha Kumbh Mela is the special alignment of the planets based on astronomy. It becomes a destination for spiritual upliftment rather than physical purification.

This Mela takes place once in every 12 years. It is determined by the planetary position of Jupiter. Specifically:

  • Jupiter – when it enters Aries, Cancer, Aquarius or Leo
  • Sun – during this time it is in Libra, Cancer, Sagittarius or Capricorn
  • The position of other planets like the Moon and Saturn is also considered

When these planetary positions are combined:

  • It is believed that celestial powers are bestowed
  • The Ganges River is extremely sacred
  • Hinduism says that taking a holy bath removes karmic sins
